What is PM2.5?

PM2.5 is fine particulate matter — smoke and dust particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres — small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Landscape and savanna fires are a major source of it across Sub-Saharan Africa. It's measured here in micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m³); higher values mean more smoke in the air and higher health risk, particularly for pregnant people.
